Mole Removal

Treatment time: 30 min
Recovery time: 2-4 weeks
Average cost: 500 + CAD (for cosmetic mole removal)
Anesthesia: Local anesthetic

  • Moles are a common type of skin growth that are usually harmless. However, there are some cases where a mole may need to be removed, either for medical or cosmetic reasons.

Medical reasons for mole removal may include:

Suspicion of skin cancer: If a mole has an irregular shape, uneven color, or changes in size or appearance, it may be a sign of skin cancer and should be removed or biopsied to determine if it is cancerous.

Cosmetic reasons for mole removal may include:

The mole causes self-consciousness or embarrassment.

The mole is in a cosmetically sensitive location.

In general, it is recommended to have a healthcare provider evaluate any moles that are new or changing in size, shape, or appearance. This can help to identify any potential signs of skin cancer and determine if mole removal is necessary.

  • Mole removal is a simple procedure performed by a plastic surgeon, involving freezing the area and excising the mole in its entirety. The incision will be closed in a straight line with stitches.

  • The incision heals within 2 weeks and you will be able to shower within 48 hours. The resultant scar has significant improvement within 6 weeks and continues to improve up to a year after surgery with good sunscreen and scar cream.

Cyst Excision

  • A skin cyst is a sac-like growth that forms beneath the skin. They are generally harmless and can be left untreated if they do not cause any pain or discomfort. Skin cysts can vary in size and can be located anywhere on the body. They are typically filled with a thick, yellowish, cheese-like substance called keratin.

Cysts can occur on any part of the body. They develop when cells from the top layer of skin become trapped under the skin. The skin naturally produces sweat and oils that can manifest as a small hard round prominence under the skin that can grow.

Skin cysts are usually diagnosed based on their appearance and location. Cysts are generally safe to leave long term without treatment. Patients may seek surgical removal if they are bothered by the appearance or they become painful or infected. Surgical removal is the most definitive way to treat this condition to avoid recurrence.

  • This minor procedure is done with freezing under local anesthetic. A small incision is made overlying the prominence of the cyst which is carefully dissected with the entire cystic sac and removed. Everything is sent to the lab to be tested to confirm the diagnosis and ensure the cyst is removed in its entirely. The incision will be closed in a straight line with dissolving stitches.

  • Patients can shower within 48 hours and the incision typically heals within 2 weeks. The resultant scar has significant improvement within 6 weeks and continues to improve up to a year after surgery with good sunscreen and scar cream.

Scrotal or Penile Calcinosis Excision

  • Scrotal or penile calcinosis present as painless nodules on the scrotum or penile shaft. They are generally harmless and can be left untreated if they are not bothersome. They are extremely common and may be numerous or recurrent.

Patients may seek surgical removal if they are bothered by the appearance or they interfere with function. Surgical removal is the most definitive way to treat this condition to avoid recurrence.

  • This minor procedure is done with freezing under local anesthetic. A small incision is made overlying the prominence of the calcinosis which is carefully dissected with the entire calcinosis cluster or solitary nodule and removed. Everything is sent to the lab to be tested to confirm the diagnosis. The incision will be closed in a flat and faint straight line with dissolving stitches which is hidden within the natural creases of the skin.

  • Patients can shower within 48 hours and the incision typically heals within 2 weeks. The resultant scar is hidden within the natural creases of the skin and has significant improvement within 6 weeks and continues to improve up to a year after surgery scar cream.

Lipoma Removal

  • A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) growth of fatty tissue cells that forms a soft, rubbery lump under the skin. These slow-growing tumors are usually painless and move easily when touched. While lipomas are generally harmless, they can occur anywhere on the body and are most commonly found on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, or thighs. Lipomas are typically small, but they can grow larger over time. In most cases, medical intervention is not required unless the lipoma causes discomfort, pain, or aesthetic concerns. Surgical removal is an option if necessary, but lipomas do not typically lead to serious health issues.

  • This minor procedure is done with freezing under local anesthetic. A small incision is made overlying the prominence of the lipoma which is carefully dissected from the underlying tissue. The incision will be closed in a straight line with dissolving stitches.

  • Patients can shower within 48 hours and the incision typically heals within 2 weeks. The resultant scar has significant improvement within 6 weeks and continues to improve up to a year after surgery with good sunscreen and scar cream.

  • A skin tag, medically known as acrochordon, is a small, benign (non-cancerous) growth that appears on the skin's surface. Skin tags are often attached to the skin by a thin stalk and can vary in size and appearance. They are typically soft and may be flesh-colored or slightly darker. Commonly found in areas where the skin rubs against itself or clothing, such as the neck, underarms, groin, and eyelids, skin tags are harmless and do not usually cause pain. While the exact cause is not always clear, factors like friction, genetics, and hormonal changes may contribute to their development. Skin tags are generally harmless, but some people may choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated or bothersome.

Earlobe Repair

  • An earlobe repair is a cosmetic or reconstructive surgical procedure aimed at restoring the appearance and structure of the earlobe. This procedure is commonly performed to address issues such as torn or stretched earlobes, often caused by trauma, heavy earrings, or gauging.

  • This minor procedure is done with freezing under local anesthetic. Once the earlobe is numb, the surgeon carefully assesses the damage and plans the repair. Depending on the nature of the issue, excess tissue may be removed, the earlobe may be reshaped, or tears may be addressed. After making the necessary adjustments, the incision is closed using sutures.

  • Patients can shower within 48 hours and the incision typically heals within 2 weeks. The resultant scar has significant improvement within 6 weeks and continues to improve up to a year after surgery with good sunscreen and scar cream.

Scar Revision

  • Scar revision surgery is a minor procedure, often done under local anesthetic, used to make a scar less noticeable or more cosmetically pleasing. This is often considered for scars resulting from previous surgeries, injuries, or other skin conditions. Scar revision surgery involves removal of the scar and reconnecting the wound edges with minimal tension. Your surgeon will also discuss other approaches such as laser therapy to improve the scar's texture and visibility. The goal of scar revision is to minimize the aesthetic impact of the scar and enhance the overall appearance of the skin.
